Over the years my grandmother has relied on Vista on her laptop, as we all understand it’s unreliable. She’ll tell me the internet isn’t working when it actually is, and she needs to go downstairs to check her PC. I’ve told her to switch to 7 because Vista is just poor quality, and I’m willing to help for free. When I ask if it can be fixed, she usually says “but it doesn’t normally do this,” which I know is just a habit—she often shakes her head and says “come on.” How do you persuade someone who isn’t tech-savvy to upgrade?

They don't accept your argument. You simply shift them to a different operating system without their awareness.

Make the upgrade and apply a skin that mimics Vista on Windows.

They created malware that could damage your PC, but only on Vista. It's just a joke, though—something like that wouldn't work on Windows 8 or 8.1. I'd suggest going with Windows 8 or 8.1 instead of 7.

Ask her to try a device with an updated operating system for a short time to gather her thoughts. I think direct personal experience is the most valuable—just avoid forcing a PC upgrade without her consent, because resistance can be harmful.

Well, if someone chooses to continue, don’t push them—it’s their decision. But if they’re interested, I’d highlight features that assist with daily activities or share videos explaining the advantages of an upgrade.

That's precisely what you carried out with your mother and her Windows 8 device.
