How to connect External HDD with USB type B plug to SATA on motherboard?
Hi everyone, I’m looking to install my WD 4tb external hard drive with a USB Type-B port inside the tower. The outer casing is damaged, so I don’t need it on a desk or atop the case. I’m checking if there’s a way to connect it via a micro cable to SATA without having it exposed. Since I have an MSI B550 Gaming Edge board, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance and sorry for any confusion.
It isn't possible. You can't create a USB 3.0 header from a USB port and connect it to another device.
It likely contains a 2.5-inch hard drive, and opening it should allow removal of the drive using a SATA connection.
Many handheld storage devices have removed the traditional SATA port and now use just a USB 3.0 micro-B connection built directly onto the circuit board.
Choose the simplest option: use a USB 3 internal adapter that fits your motherboard’s header or a PCI-e card with built-in ports—these are relatively cheap. If you have an older drive, it should still have standard SATA connections inside. In the worst scenario, it might rely on mini-SATA connectors like those found in laptops. Adapters are also available if needed.
