I attempted to purchase it from the source, but after logging in I encountered an issue. The login service was reported as unavailable. There seems to be no alternative method listed, and Steam did not have it available for sale.

Maybe the origin isn't working for some reason—let's give it another try in about half an hour. P.S.: Just confirmed that origin is functioning properly for me!

It's not. You might search for key-stores that sell just keys, but you'd still need Origin to run the game. It's similar to Steam for Valve titles, Rockstar Club for GTA, and UPlay for Ubisoft releases. All EA-released games are available there.
