I own an MSI GTX 970 (http://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/b3077/m...970-gaming) and wish to achieve 4k gaming. It currently operates around 48 fps, and I aim to safely overclock it.

The GTX 970 doesn't support 4K gaming even after overclocking. You should consider a GTX 980 Ti or newer GTX 10xx graphics cards.
