I have a problem on my house wired internet. My router, which is by Telenor and located on the first floor, has one cable going up two floors where there is an Asus AC750 router that supports 802.11ac speeds. From this router, I run cables to my son's room and to my office. In both places, I also have a Telenor WiFi amplifier with ethernet ports connected. However, the internet speed is not fast enough. I pay for a download and upload speed of 600 mbits/s, but when using fast.com, I only get around 70 mbits/s. So, do I need to replace my cheap cables that are too thin or have I done something wrong with how everything is set up?

Yeah, there are quality differences with ethernet cables. Since you're using a laptop, you can start checking from the first step of your setup to find where things go wrong. Buy a brand new 100% copper cat5e or cat6a cable (I recommend monoprice cables -- https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Flexboo...B00KWS7GAC) and begin testing the first device. Then keep moving to the next one. Either this link is broken OR just one of these devices has a 100Mbit ethernet port. Both situations could be true. Once you find where the speed drops, check the specs for the last tested device. Does it have gigabit ethernet ports? If yes, then bad cable. If no, then an old device that needs to be replaced.

So, we don't know if this problem comes from slow internet or because some of our cable connections are down to 100mbps. The first thing you can try is checking the speed on your ethernet controller. It might be either 100mbps or 1Gbps (you can see these numbers here at majorgeeks). Please avoid using flat ethernet cables, as they often stop the port from working fully. Next, if it says 1Gbps, look for the link speed number on your Asus router and follow the manual. Sometimes a light color tells you whether you are getting 1Gbps or just 100Mbps. Finally, if several people are using internet at once, that could just be high usage and not a real problem.

Hey everyone, thanks for all your replies! I'm going to check the settings first and then nothing else. It's definitely not about having too many people online at once. Fast.com works fine even if just me is using it when nobody else is there, especially late at night.

What type of Ethernet cable do you use? Is your kid's internet faster than yours? Try running a test on speedtest.net.
