I replaced one after twenty years because its failure was clearly coming soon—though it sometimes lost the RTC occasionally. there are various options tried, but usually a CR2032 is considered: - the most dependable choice - the least expensive - the simplest to install, though after five years it starts to feel uncertain, and beyond that supercapacitors become similarly doubtful. also, many slim laptops no longer use CMOS batteries since they assume the main power is always there.

I owned a Mac SE from 1987, and its battery kept working even after the system stopped in 2017. It probably served to maintain time when there was no internet connection, and it seems it didn’t have a BIOS.

It's been over five years since I replaced the battery in my 9900K setup. The one I used is the same kind found in calculators and car keys, and it tends to last a long time.
