It seems the feed rollers are slipping in the lid or the scanning head is hanging off the rails beneath the glass. The issue hinges on how you obtained the sample. In either case, disassembly, cleaning, and lubrication are necessary. Dirty glass can also prevent the original from sliding smoothly. Avoid using any glass cleaners containing ammonia on copiers or scanners.
