Hello, I'm exploring options for a new CPU to pair with my RTX 3080. My current setup features an i9 7900X purchased around 2018, paired with 64GB RAM and a top-tier motherboard. At the time, it seemed like a solid deal. Now that prices have risen, I'm considering whether this high-end CPU will still perform well for gaming in the next couple of years. I've been using it alongside my 1080Ti for two years without issues. If I decide to upgrade my GPU, I'm thinking about replacing the CPU as well. Benchmarks suggest the i9 7900X is often outperformed by cheaper CPUs, but since I already own it, I'm wondering if it will still meet my needs for the RTX 3080 over the next few years. I'm also evaluating the i9 10900K as a more affordable alternative that could potentially be valuable if I decide to invest in a new motherboard later.

I’m not a fortune teller. For top performance, upgrading to at least a 12-core Ryzen or a 10-core 10900K would be ideal. The high-core Ryzen chips excel in both gaming and work tasks. Both the 5900X and 5950X are strong choices for gaming and productivity.

Let me know if you want to stay on your current CPU, and I'll check its suitability for the RTX 3080.

It’s fine to stick with 144fps or higher; it’ll likely run smoothly for many years and remain a solid gaming CPU.

Thanks, I think it's okay. I probably won't upgrade for another couple of years. I plan to get a new PC then, around 2-3 years later. I'll switch to the RTX 3080 since it really boosts gaming performance, as long as my CPU can keep up.

Since it weighs around 850 pounds and I mainly rely on it for gaming plus some video work, I believe a more affordable CPU with a newer model would be ideal.

Sure, I get it. A 10.9 GHz chip at half the cost with superior performance could work just fine if we replace my motherboard.

I'm weighing whether to keep using this CPU or upgrade it. It handles gaming well, but the only real upgrade would be a GPU. If I can rely on it for years until I need something better, that seems okay. As long as it isn't slowing me down with the RTX 3080, it's fine.
