How far can I push my FX-8350?
Good afternoon!
I recently acquired an FX-8350 from a friend and transferred it to my own system. The fan noise is quite high compared to my Arctic Freezer 13 LE, so I decided to replace it with a CM Hyper 412. I’m curious if upgrading the CPU would be beneficial—just enough to notice a performance improvement while avoiding damage. I’d appreciate some advice on possible options.
Avoid overclocking on these AM3+ Micro boards, as they feature weak power and thermal designs.
What are your idle temperatures? We need to understand your motherboard to see if overclocking makes sense.
The power supply might not be providing enough power.
With a suitable motherboard, you could reach up to 4.5, but I'm uncertain about the PSU.
I wouldn't push the overclocking too much with a VS power supply , regardless of the cooler.

The power supply seems to be underpowered.
You should probably aim for around 4.5 with a solid motherboard, though I'm not confident about the PSU.

We need to know the motherboard. Some are too weak to run the FX 8-core processor at stock speeds without overheating.
It's a Gigabyte GA-78LMT. The system runs between 35-45 degrees idle and can exceed 65 during gaming. Keep in mind this is with the previous cooler.

Sadly, I have to concur with blackbird. My FX-6300 is running at a 4.3 overclock (the exact figure isn't important, just that it's at least 4.1...). I attempted to push it with an 8350 and further overclocking, but the results were disappointing. It seems the device simply can't handle the extra voltage from an 8-core or a high overclock.
