I’m preparing for a Windows 10 upgrade and want an SSD to improve performance. I’m considering reformatting my old drive and cleaning things up. My main concern is whether Windows will have trouble installing the new OS because it’s moving from Windows 7. I was thinking about cloning the boot partition onto the SSD, then formatting the rest and upgrading. It sounds like a possibility, but I’m not sure how to do it or if there are better ways. Any guidance would be helpful.

While it's possible to clone Windows across, I find that going from HDD to SSD can cause problems when you transfer. I would suggest doing a clean install of Windows 7 on the SSD, then doing the upgrade to Windows 10 when it releases (or, you may want to wait for the first patches to come around, where any issues with upgrading should be fixed).
