You can protect the pins by securing them in a foam block before shipping. Taping the CPU to a stable surface also helps prevent damage during transit.

Gently press them into the foam. They aren't very delicate.

It seems you're suggesting that a small amount of foam can be used without needing an alternative location.

Avoid damaging them by using a small light foam block. Place the CPU gently inside and wrap everything together. If foam isn't available, cut a square hole in cardboard matching the processor size, attach another piece behind it. Let it dry, then secure the CPU into the hole with tape and a final cardboard layer to hold it in place before shipping. Foam is simpler, but cardboard also works effectively.
