How do i setup a home network?
Hello! You're looking to set up a home network using your old server with a HOMENET setup. First, connect your router to the modem and PC. Then link everything properly by following the router's instructions. For backup and gaming, ensure you have stable connections and consider resetting the server if needed to access BIOS and configure your HDDs.
You already have a home network set up. Simply connect your router to it and use switches for additional ports. More detailed settings exist, but this covers the basics. Which HP server model are you using? What are its specifications? Was an operating system installed?
I'm not familiar with those terms, but I meant setting up my own network with backups and virtual machines connected to my server. It's an older system I got from electricians who didn't need it. It's running an HP Proliant with two Intel processors and a few GB of DDR3 RAM.
Connect the server directly to your router's LAN ports and you should be able to reach it from your computer. You'll need to install an operating system on the server. Then configure network shares for file storage, set up virtual machines, and gain access to them. There are likely tutorial videos on YouTube that can help with the initial setup. If the server uses an older model like an Opteron, it may be outdated and not worth pursuing.
It has windows but I never managed to enable file sharing and I’m not sure how to configure a system for backups of certain folders to both my main drive and iCloud. I probably overlooked all this. I’m having trouble finding a clear video that shows how to set up a file share or backup server that works with VMs.
I'm not sure, but it might have been Windows 10 Pro. Yes, a clean install worked. It had Linux features, but no one had the password and the BIOS was missing. I installed Windows again and cleared the CMOS so I could reset the HDD settings. Could you find a helpful video on this process?
Windows 10 should handle these tasks. Have you turned on Hyper-V? You can set up a network share. I’m not sure if a single video explains everything, but there are resources for making a network share and configuring Hyper-V.
