Hello, recently my brother changed the cooling paste on my laptop without me telling him. Now I see that my computer gets hotter than it used to. I think he messed up when applying it. I haven't fixed anything like this before. Is this a big deal? Maybe how you do it depends on what CPU you have. How can I fix this myself? Here is the info about my machine: Model: E595, which is a ThinkPad laptop running an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega Mobile graphics.

Unplug your computer and look for the little fan that attaches to your processor. Take it off, get a plain credit card, wipe any old grease from it, and rub some new thermal paste all over the spot where the fan meets the board.

So I need to put this stuff everywhere? Can I just dip a little bit in glue and stick it on, or won't it stick around all by itself?

If you need to make sure there is no extra cooling paste left over, just spread it out carefully.

Views differ here. A single dot spreads out easily under heat and pressure without air gaps. That's how I like it done. The other method is okay too, but it relies on skillful spreading with no room for trapped air. Regardless, the cooler must be mounted evenly. Tighten the screws in a criss-cross pattern a bit at a time to make sure it sits level.
