The expansion port comes from a Seagate 4TB drive. The motherboard in question appears to be the one for the Dell XPS 8700.

Yes, the setup suggests placing the HDD on top of the case with USB ports close to the audio connections.

Consider switching to the USB 3 ports located on the rear side. These connections come from Intel, but they require Microsoft drivers instead of the ones available for Windows 10.
