How do I fix my QuestionReplacement SSD and get it working?
I bought a brand new 1TB M.2 internal hard drive for my Dell G7 laptop, which has replaced my old 256GB one. The laptop also still has a big 1TB mechanical hard drive inside it. I keep trying to get Windows onto the new SSD, but nothing works. Here is what I've tried so far: Creating a system image from an external Seagate SSD and copying that file into my new SSD; going into BIOS settings after which I almost killed the computer by messing around too much with every possible boot option; putting the old hard drive back in to try making a recovery disk, but that doesn't actually save any of my personal files. Basically, I want to make a full copy of my current system and just swap it all over into the new SSD. Right now, I'm downloading Windows 10 installation media and not sure how to use it to get me booted up. Honestly, I've been searching online for hours with no luck. I need help figuring out what to do next since I don't have a CD drive or an extra internal hard drive. Is there a way for this just using my computer and that external SSD?
Lots of folks on this site use Macrium software to move data from an old hard drive to a brand-new SSD. You can try doing that yourself, but be careful: make sure to copy every single partition of the old drive and pick the right option to stretch those partitions so they fit perfectly into the new SSD.
You said you want to make an image for an external SSD, and cloning works exactly like that. Just copy the old SSD's data onto the new one so they look identical, then swap them out. This will work if you clone every single partition on the old drive too. Keep in mind though that since it's a laptop, you might need to check with Dell about any security features that could stop this from working.
