i have a 500gb ssd and plan to switch to windows 11 soon. i understand updating from windows 10 to 11 might cause issues, so i’m considering a clean install. should i just transfer the data to another hard drive and then reinstall? if yes, which files should i skip backing up? additionally, my system runs a ryzen 5 5600 with gtx 1660 super. will upgrading to windows 11 impact performance?

To perform a fresh setup on a refurbished storage, you must format the drive using your installation software. This action will erase every file on the drive. Make sure to back up any information you wish to retain. Once W11 is installed, you'll reach this interface. Remove all partitions you no longer need by choosing them and clicking delete, then select the main drive and the partition you want to format. For this specific drive, I recommend deleting partitions 2 and 3 on drive 0, followed by formatting the first partition of drive 0.

Thanks! I also wanted to check if Windows 11 would impact my PC gaming. My system has a Ryzen 5 5600 and GTX 1660 Super. Will switching to Windows 11 change how well it runs games?

Yes, Windows 11 offers several improvements for gaming beyond direct storage. It includes enhanced graphics settings, better performance optimizations, and updated drivers that can boost frame rates. The HDR support is indeed better, providing a more vivid visual experience. Other notable differences are improved system stability and compatibility with newer hardware.

The gaming experience on Windows 10 and Windows 11 should be almost identical, with only minor differences. Few games currently use direct storage, but Microsoft is working on releasing direct storage 1.1 by year-end. More games are likely to adopt this feature soon.

There are several approaches you can take. You might create a new partition and move all your files there, then use the first one to erase and install Windows. Just remember not to format the wrong partition. Alternatively, follow the steps you normally would—back up your data, including games and files that can be re-downloaded, reducing the size of your backup. You can smoothly upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. The main concern is whether the system previously had a virus or malware (security software can remove them, but not restore damage). Other factors include using certain tweak tools, registry cleaners, or repair utilities. Problems usually arise during system setup. The biggest worry is whether your drive was formatted correctly. Windows 11 doesn’t support older operating systems, which means it prefers UEFI instead of BIOS. If your system wasn’t validated in UEFI, it might default to Legacy mode, assuming users would install Windows XP. This leads to many support requests when the update launched. Ensure your setup is correct: - UEFI must be enabled - CSM should be off - Secure Boot must be active - TPM needs to be turned on - ReBar for Win11 support should be activated, which often requires the latest BIOS/UEFI. If your CSM or UEFI settings were incorrect, you may need to format the drive or convert your backup from MBR to GPT.
