How can I swap out a broken keyboard on my laptop?
Both laptops use no screws to stick the keyboard to the plastic shell. To skip that step with a soldering gun or hot glue, you have to buy a cover that already has the keyboard stuck on it. If you want someone else to do this, go to some PC repair shops nearby and ask them to help. Regarding the keyboard itself, you are lucky because most other Asus laptops use the same type of keys. To find more stores online, search Google for "Asus X550JX tangentbord" or whatever key word is in your local language. Thanks Mettall. Oh no, that isn't great news. I really thought the Asus Zenbook UX331F would at least come with a replaceable keyboard made just by screws. Can you tell me how you check on keyboards like you did? (So I know what to look for later). Thanks so much for sharing the link about the keyboard - I think it shows a Scandinavian/Nordic layout, which is exactly what I have right now, and I want to switch to QWERTY. Ideally UK layout, otherwise US would be fine too. Could you help me find a replacement? Does the end part of the laptop model number ('DM257T' in my X550JX-DM257T) need to match when looking for replacements or should I just search for 'Asus X550JX keyboard'? The answer to all your questions is simple: just do your own Google search! For the screws question, check this video here: https://youtu.be/ZiqO-pWYzmw?t=557 Do you see any screws holding the keyboard? If you have a laptop, you can take it apart by yourself. To get started, remove the cover that holds the keyboard on your own and then look inside. The model version (DM257T) doesn't matter much when looking for a replacement. You should just use the model number - X550JX instead. The makers are using one type of keyboard across many different laptop models. So if you check the link in Amazon, you can see that this keyboard fits several Asus computers. If you take it apart yourself, you might even find a part number on the old keyboard and use that to search for a replacement. Also be sure not to expect the new keyboards to match the quality of the original ones. Probably they come from different factories, have different settings, are made in different batches or use different materials. You can talk to the seller before buying one to ask them more questions. And speaking about this... you should make your own choices when picking a new keyboard. Don't worry about making that decision too late. I cannot tell you exactly which keyboard you should buy. But there are plenty of options available for you. I saw that funny video about a keyboard looking just like yours. That guy used two-sided duck tape and some super strong glue, but I'm not sure if it will stick well in the end. From all my ideas, using a soldering gun is probably the strongest way to attach this thing right now. Maybe that's not the best choice though. You could just use a flat-head screwdriver and twist it under the keyboard, which would pop the head of those little plastic pins out instead.
Hi mettall, thank you so much for all your messages! I have attached a photo showing the inside of my laptop. It looks like there are no screws to take out the keyboard - is that correct? I appreciate you sending the video link - nice idea with melting the cable ties! To be honest though, I think doing soldering and such is way too much for me right now. Maybe it would be better to just buy a new laptop cover with the keyboard attached (with QWERTY keys, preferably UK layout, or US if you prefer). If that were YOU, where might you find this? Is it better to buy from Asus directly (and maybe pay more) or just grab something on eBay or Amazon? I was wondering - with the photo - where is the serial number for the current keyboard and cover? Would knowing the part numbers help me make sure I get the right pieces replaced? Sorry, I'm new at this and don't want to order the wrong thing! To find a compatible parts you need the OEM Part number, or just part number (P/N), or SCU number. The part number is something like: 90NB08Y2-R31US0 90NB02F8-R31US0 So try to find some number on the cover and search in google by that number. Usually the serial numbers are not shown under the palmrest cover. Usually they are shown on the bottom of the laptop or somewhere on the case. And sometimes is enough to know just the model number - X550JX in your case. So you can find the part by searching by any of that. However, that does not mean that if you order from amazon/ebay you will necessary get fake parts. Sometimes they could be manufactured in the same factory. You can contact the sellers and ask them for additional information, pictures, etc. As for myself, i'm waiting for my parts to arrive from China. They were not present in any european store. Hi mettall, thanks again for all your help and sorry I took a while to reply. Sadly, I couldn't find the part number or SCU for that keyboard/palm rest cover. There was a barcode on the palm rest, but just 4 digits next to it with no other codes visible. Also checked under the laptop. Any idea where else that might be? Thanks so much for sharing your search results to help me order this. Unfortunately, they don't match because my keyboard has an L-shaped enter key (see picture below). If we could find products with that L-shaped feature it would be great. Have you ever ordered directly from China? Were there any issues or problems when sending back items and what was the shipping process like? I haven't done this before, so I'm really curious to hear about it. Yeah, these keyboards with the palm rest are set up for US layout. The ones that have the L-shaped enter key are made for UK layout. I'm not sure if there are UK layouts with attached palm rests available. But I guess it's okay if you buy the whole cover and keyboard together. You should be careful when ordering things from China. Always choose sellers who have high positive feedback, better than 90% just to be safe... I haven't returned anything back to China yet. Every seller has different rules on returns. If something isn't described clearly, you can contact them and ask about that. If you don't get the item within some months, you can request a refund through the platform. Also, if the item arrives but it's not as described, you can ask the seller for a partial refund. Some EU countries might hold packages from non-EU countries at customs for a few days until they figure out the VAT status. But eBay and Aliexpress should pay the VAT when you buy the product so everything should be fine. Just remember to check if the price includes VAT... I'm sure you can find many Facebook groups where people talk about shopping from China. Those groups might have descriptions of your local laws and other stuff too.
