How can I move my stuff from an SSD safely?
I recently bought a brand new PC. I copied stuff from an old laptop by just plugging its SSD straight into the new machine. Both computers run Windows 11. I had BitLocker on, but pasted in the key and everything transferred fine. Once I plugged it back into the laptop, I got permission errors all over the place. The Start menu won't load. I tried fixing this online but couldn't get help so I'm just resetting my laptop right now. I want to ask - is there a safe way to do such a direct file copy without these problems happening? Maybe I messed something up during the process? I had a lot of files, so copying directly made sense.
The simplest approach would be to use a shared folder on the fresh computer and simply move your documents over the local network. Don't worry about those system libraries; you only need your personal stuff. No dragging hard drives around or messing with the Start button. Just straight forward, easy peasy.
I can't believe my mind went blank when I tried to open things up. Did you actually turn on your computer from the right place last time? Please check your internet connection first. Then try fixing it the hard way next time so we don't ruin everything again.
To move files around safely, you need to copy them somewhere other than your own folder where everyone can reach them first. Once they are out there, just log in as the person who owns the folder and copy it back there. Don't try copying from one user's folder straight into another; Windows protects these folders by default so that only the owner has access, and messing with that protection usually causes problems.
