How can I get Win 10 to play old DX9 games like Win 7?
I have made a quick check using the same computer with both Windows 7 and Windows 10 running Mafia 2 (DX9) and ETS2 (DX11). The simple answer is that on this PC, Windows 7 runs Mafia 2 about five frames per second faster than Windows 10. But wait, Windows 10 actually makes ETS2 run a bit quicker by five frames per second compared to the old version. Is there any way to make Windows 10 play these older games as smoothly as they did on older computers? PS: I tried putting Mafia 2 in compatibility mode just for Win 10 but it didn't help at all. Here is a simple guide on how to play the game in DirectX 9 mode on Windows 10: If you don't see anything happen when you turn off the DX11 setting, then it means the game is only running in DirectX 11. Thanks, Lutnj, but those drivers only work with old DX11 games running on DX9. I actually want a DX9 game to play smoothly in Windows 10 just like it did back when I used Windows 7.
Are you using the exact same driver version for both operating systems? It might also just be a simple fact that mafia2 is a 32-bit game, so it runs better on 32-bit Windows 7, while the other game is built for 64-bit and performs better on 64-bit Windows 11.
I have drivers from AMD's official website. I downloaded and installed drivers for their operating systems, which means one driver for Windows 7 and another for Windows 10. When it comes to the computer architecture that games run on, I am leaning toward your opinion because Mafia 2 was released in 2010 while this game (the ETS2 version) came out in 2020.
It might be because Windows 10 uses too many things in the background or has extra driver overhead for some things. But I want to ask one thing: how much difference is there from what? If you are getting about 200 FPS on Windows 7, a small drop of 5 FPS isn't really worth worrying about. However, if you see something like 40-50 FPS more, then it might actually make sense to aim for that.
But if the drivers are different for Win 7 and Win 10, that might also be why things show up differently.
Actually, I see about 55 frames per second playing Mafia 2 and around 65 from ETS2. These numbers are pretty steady no matter if I'm on Windows 7 or Windows 10. When looking at the raw numbers though, 55 happens on Win7 for both games while 51 comes up on Win10 with Mafia 2. With ETS2 it's 70 on Win7 and 75 on Win10.
