I've been looking for a laptop under $700, and the Ideapad Slim 3 seems like a good fit. It comes with a Ryzen 7 5700U processor but only 8GB of RAM. Since there aren't many reviews available, I'm not sure about any extra RAM slots or other features. If you're okay with that, it might be worth trying it out.

Relies on your specific needs. Light tasks and web browsing should work fine. Heavy workloads may require more than 8 GB. https://www.lenovo.com/in/en/laptops/ide...8IPS301432 This indicates 4 GB soldered plus 4 GB SO-DIMM. Ideally you could swap the SO-DIMM for something like 8 GB or more to reach 12 or 20 GB, though dual-channel support might be affected.

It's not too bad, but it really depends on your specific needs. If you have enough budget and space—about 16GB total with 8GB dedicated and an extra 8GB in a stick—go for it. It seems to have one channel soldered.

You should keep in mind that a slim laptop often has limited upgrade options, but that doesn’t mean it’s not useful. Your current device might still work well for now.

It has been a long time since I last used it. I’m moving to a dorm and need something that won’t disturb my parents’ work.

That’s a tough situation. The dorms didn’t provide laptops, and we’ll likely need fieldwork, so I probably won’t have a workspace.
