Hostapd Slowdown
Hostapd Slowdown
I’m setting up a wireless access point on my NAS (E7500 PC) with hostapd and bridge-utils to let the router handle DHCP. I’m concerned about possible slowdowns in file serving or handling more clients. Since everything on the NAS is gigabit and I’ll use a USB 2.0 Wi-Fi adapter, will performance impact be noticeable? Your feedback would be really helpful.
Currently, I'm not fully on Wireless. It depends on the NIC and driver support, as not all devices support 80211/ac in AP mode.
Currently everything uses Cat6 wiring, but wireless coverage isn’t available upstairs where the PC is located. I’m considering connecting the onboard Ethernet card to a Wi-Fi adapter so mobile or wireless devices can join the network.
You'll notice a decrease in performance. Wireless offers speed but lacks the reliability of wired connections. Even with all devices connected via cables, silence might still be an issue. That's why wireless could be useful after all.
All hardware that supports wired connections exists, such as computers and gaming systems, while portable units depend on wireless links.
