You're weighing wired versus wireless for your LAN party. Wireless offers ease of use but may lag behind wired connections, which are faster and more reliable—especially for offline gaming. You're looking for a balance: knowing the speed difference between a 5GHz router and a 16-port switch, and deciding whether to prioritize wireless performance or stability. For groups of ten or more, you'll want a robust switch with strong wired support if needed. If wireless meets your needs, consider a solid router; otherwise, opt for a switch with good Ethernet capabilities.

The 16 way switch offers quicker response times, though wireless connectivity will keep latency under 20ms. It won’t significantly affect your ping, even when online. For gaming, you’ll need a decent router—something with 100Mbps or 1Gbps capability would work well (I found a managed 24-way switch for £24 on eBay). Consumer models are usually cheaper, but managed ones cost more. A switch is more enjoyable, and if you already have a router, it’s easy to install (just confirm if it’s managed or unmanaged first; setting the IP before adding it to your network prevented issues).

Your access point or router should support the clients without interruptions, so Wi-Fi works well for LAN.

WiFi should work well for most users, though speeds may drop when many devices connect simultaneously. With plenty of Ethernet cables, a wired connection is the best choice—wireless simply won’t match. A Gigabit or 100Mbps setup with multiple ports will suffice. For LAN gaming, wired connections are always superior.

I've consistently favored wired connections over wireless since they experience fewer disruptions from nearby devices operating on similar frequencies. With wired setups, performance typically meets 90 to 95% of the network's capabilities.

It should work fine with wireless depending on your router model and connected devices, but I’d favor a wired connection if available.
