home switch help
Hello, I'm looking to purchase a switch for home use that connects Ethernet to 2.5Gbps. My current internet speed is around 120Mbit/s upload at 20Mbit/s download. I need three ports for two PCs and one for a laptop. The budget is up to 30 USD (about 27 EUR).
They're all gigabit capable, delivering speeds eight times faster than your usual downloads. I connected my Netgear 5-Port switch and everything worked smoothly.
You don't specify your location but the euro is relevant. You require a switch with 1000 mbps Ethernet connections. While a network switch with 100 mbps ports could work, your speeds would cap at 100 mbps. The cost gap between 100 mbps and 1000 mbps switches is minimal, making the upgrade unappealing. Basic switches typically offer 5 ports, increasing to 8. Metal cases often signal better build quality compared to plastic ones, though exceptions exist. Consider reputable brands such as D-Link, TP-Link, Trendnet, Netgear, etc. The Trendnet TEG-S50g (5-port, 1000 Mbps) costs around $15 on Amazon. It includes a 5-port unmanaged Gigabit switch, Ethernet splitter, and supports up to 10 Gbps. It features fanless design and lifetime protection for computers and accessories. Available in both metal and plastic cases.
Generally any budget switch will suffice. The ASIC feature applies similarly across most manufacturers but there are two key points: Verify it supports Gigabit (10/100/1000) speed. Confirm it’s a Switch, not a Hub. While a hub isn’t a big issue on a small scale, it’s not the best choice. Avoid this option.
Slovakia is in Europe. This model has a metal casing. The center isn't white. Is it ready for use?
It's essentially identical. Just install it, link your computers, and connect to the router via uplink.
