MXLinux23 paired with Fluxbox Kernel version 6.1.0-11 for an Intel Core2 Duo T6670 processor works smoothly on older or low-power systems. It consumes under 400MB of RAM when idle. Drawbacks include adapting to different computing habits from Windows and occasional outdated software updates. The distribution is based on Debian, emphasizing reliability over the latest features.

Interesting point. I didn't encounter any issues with Lutris even when playing Garuda.

Gentoo Rolling Release Meta OS features AMD 5600X processor, Vega64 GPU, 16 GB DDR4 RAM at 3000MHz. Uses Asus B350 motherboard. Displays two 1080p monitors at 75Hz. KDE & DWM Pros offer flexibility with stable, tested and experimental packages. Customization is straightforward but requires a solid understanding. Learning curve is high for newcomers. Some quirks include source-compiled everything (some packages have binary choices). Overall, it functions more like an OS development toolkit than a finished operating system. Next year’s desktop will run on this setup, making distro changes impractical due to extensive accumulated tweaks and personalization.

Consider what you know about OpenSUSE and Debian, then explore Gentoo’s setup guides. Adjust your expectations based on differences in package management and system configuration.

Review the installation instructions before beginning, keeping them open on another device during setup. During kernel configuration, frequently run 'lscpi -nnk' and 'lsmod' to locate module names in menuconfig and verify their activation. Keep in mind you're constructing an operating system from scratch, which can tempt you to use a desktop meta package and let portage manage everything else—ensure all dependencies are installed, properly configured, and functioning correctly before proceeding. OpenRC tends to be simpler than systemd, particularly for first-time installations; it can always be changed later if needed.
