Meta: please use THIS as a template for comprehensive posts detailing the experience with the OS in general. Meta: Please say how you fixed something if you did. Meta: Not intended for steam deck discussion. This thread is for the sake of posting critical objects, features or odd behavior of operating systems. Please post your system specs in tandem, and if nvidia, which gpu driver you are using. This should be informative to help someone decide which distro to choose but also how they may be interested in setting it up or using it. Please keep in mind that non-steam+proton runners like lutris are heavily dependant on things such as wine configurations through winetricks for example. We should format submissions semi-nicely. A reply will follow the OP with some formatting.
Library of user feedback for Ubuntu-based distributions (original source): Snapcraft integration in Ubuntu is tightly built-in and not ideal. 8/21/2023 PikaOS on Ubuntu offers solid stability for this user, especially with NVIDIA support. Strong technical gaming foundation. 8/21/2023 Manjaro: generic comment about SSL controversies placeholder. 12/31/1969 Pop!_os: discusses input lag and compatibility strengths. 8/21/2023 Arch: notes high customization level leading to memory constraints. 12/31/1969 Void OS: highlights OpenGL support on Void Linux for users. Some applications fail without systemd. 8/21/2023 Mint: reports graphical issues with Steam but overall stable, no snaps required. 8/21/2023 Gentoo Chromium: benchmarks are decent; one OS install lasted two decades without reinstalling. MX Linux: minimal memory usage.
Pop!_os is a rolling release operating system. It doesn’t use the AMD 6700xt i7 10700f with 32GB RAM on a Lenovo motherboard. Two monitors were tested under x11 and Wayland. GNOME and Popos builds worked well in DE Pros. Strengths include strong compatibility with Wine and minimal tweaking needed for Linux distributions. Stability is high, similar to most popular distros. Weaknesses involve significant input lag at lower frame rates (often several seconds). The issue wasn’t resolved, so the distribution was eventually dropped. Video player software had major problems; VLC was used instead. The system started with x11 by default, later switched to Wayland. Additional notes: This Ubuntu-based example is useful but limited in detail. It’s been about a month since this post, and I’m still double-checking my memory before sharing.
This feature isn't available on any Ubuntu-based operating system. It's a limitation.
PikaOS Hybrid Release OS delivers the newest Vulkan drivers and gaming tools with stable performance. CPU features AMD 7900XT, GPU is 7900XTX, RAM offers 32 GBs DDR5 at 5600MHz. Board supports Aorus Elite X670. Displays include a 1080p@60Hz and 1440p@240 Hz monitor from Hyprland. Key advantages: snap removal, full Ubuntu app compatibility, flatpak ready like SteamOS. Base is rock-solid, ensuring minimal issues. Cutting-edge Vulkan drivers and gaming utilities enhance the gaming experience. Precision matters—colors, consistency, and sound are finely tuned. Nvidia versions can be downloaded. Drawbacks: unstable experimentation compared to Arch-based systems. Quirks include seamless Wayland support on Nvidia. Overall, an Ubuntu-focused platform with a polished feel.
Linux Mint stable and dependable. Features: OS version 21.2, running on x86_64, based on ThinkPad E595. Kernel version 6.2.0-26-generic, resolution 1920x1080, uses Xfce 4.18. CPU is AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega graphics. RAM capacity 1758MiB to 13843MiB. Advantages: performs smoothly with minimal problems, supports newer hardware, community support strong. Disadvantages: may lag on older systems, not ideal for cutting-edge specs. Issues: occasional strange visual bugs with Steam.
Gentoo Rolling Release OS is suitable for advanced users. It offers a tailored experience with packages matching your needs, allowing minimal configurations. However, it requires familiarity with source-based systems and isn't ideal for beginners. The system setup reveals more about your cooling setup, and you can easily test Chromium compilation times. The package manager avoids heavy cPython dependencies, which may affect speed but aligns with Gentoo's philosophy. This distro remains one of the older yet active options, with many derivatives like ChromeOS available.
