I've boosted my 8700k to 4.9Ghz at 1.28v on an Asus Prime Z370-a with a hydro x loop setup. I'm using a 240mm and 150mm fans. On a Cinebench R20, the temperature stayed around 80°C. Is this the actual max for the 8th gen chip? Your friend with a 480mm fan and 9600k at 5Ghz stays cooler, about 40°C max. A higher temperature might just mean more cooling or less hyperthreading.
The readings look quite high for such low voltages and large radii. I think others in similar setups have better results with Noctuas or AIOs. Your rig seems fine, though. Delidding probably won’t make much difference. You might squeeze a few hundred MHz out of it, but it’s more about passion than a real cooling upgrade.
It's quite disappointing. I had my 8700k liquid-cooled with a Corsair H100i 240mm AIO, and now I'm running about 15-20°C cooler under load. Previously, I was OC'd at 5.0GHz, but now it's at 5.1GHz. Despite having the radiative front mounted in a mesh panel case with push-pull fans, the improvement would definitely be noticeable. If you're willing, it could really make a difference.
Your workspace is around 72°F with a likely 15°C fluctuation. Proceed carefully—avoid damaging the PCB during the second pass; the lid may detach. Secure polish around components and the board. Follow the LM guidelines, applying two thin coats with one thin layer on the IHS plate. Place small Permatex Ultra black dots at each corner and gently press them into place. Install the lever, holding the IHS plate firmly until it sets. After 24 hours, the dots will fully harden. Set up in about an hour. The process handles both high and low temperatures well—water cooling helps maintain stability. When removing the CPU, the plate stays secure without sliding. This seems to be a solid approach; any further tips welcome!
It's perfectly fine with what you did. I felt stuck, so I picked up a delid kit and rewatched the GN tutorial several times—it really helped me out.
