High virtual memory usage despite available physical memory.
Hey there, I checked online but didn’t find a clear answer to what’s going on. After playing Ghost of Tsushima for about 3-4 hours, performance drops noticeably. Sometimes the OS slows down or stutters even after closing the game, and once the game crashed with a DEVICE_HUNG error. Profiling showed no extreme CPU or GPU usage, but my virtual memory usage hit nearly 100% while physical RAM stayed around 14-15 GB free. I saw some similar issues online, but it’s hard to understand why this happens. Could the game be using more memory than it actually needs? Is there a memory leak or something else at play? Thanks for your help! PS: My setup is an i9-13900K with RTX 4080 and 32GB RAM.
I’m sure it’s not the issue here. I had a degraded CPU before, but I returned it to Intel and now have a fresh unit. All BIOS updates are applied, and the Vcore stays within the suggested range. The new CPU also keeps temperatures around 15-20°C (up to 40°C in some cases), and Ghost of Tsushima is the only game affected by this problem.
it seems the Nvidia drivers might be problematic recently, or the latest updates to Ghost of Tsushima are not well optimized. Anyone have an AMD configuration to verify this on AMD GPUs? I don’t own the game myself, so I wouldn’t have provided a more detailed response.
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG is a common issue where the graphics device appears unresponsive. Likely causes include the game assuming more VRAM than available, or a driver problem. It's still unclear if it was resolved by now.
It was the crash when it suddenly stopped working. My first idea was the game took too long to freeze, causing the GPU timeout in Windows (about 2 seconds). I also noticed Application Error logs in the Event Viewer about a dlss DLL file with an access violation. Edit: After the crash, only the game closed, and the OS stayed stable. I restarted it and continued playing.
There are numerous discussions on Reddit about memory issues in that game, but most are from over a year ago. I’m not sure if it’s been fixed. https://www.reddit.com/r/ghostoftsushima...eak_on_pc/ Are you dealing with the same problem in other games?
A frustrating solution would be to save the game and leave when performance drops. If virtual memory isn’t released after closing, restart the system. It’s unclear how much data is stored on the SSD that way. This approach seems inefficient for the drive’s longevity since it relies heavily on virtual memory instead of RAM. Clearly, the game’s code isn’t well thought out.
