high temps on Linux ubuntu for laptop
I'm trying to transition from Windows 10 to Linux. I'm just starting out with the Linux setup. I installed lm-sensors to monitor temperatures on my laptop. It's not too demanding, just writing some code in cLion while Chrome is open. When I run sensors in the terminal, temperatures spike to 75°C. In Windows, the laptop stayed cooler and I checked drivers. I seem to have limited driver packages, especially for my GPU and some Intel drivers. I'm unsure what's causing the extra heat, but could missing drivers be a factor? My laptop: [link]. I don't want to overheat it and the fans barely turn on unless I'm gaming. Can I improve thermal management in Linux? The laptop doesn't overheat and it wasn't hot in Windows.
Is there any weight at the back? It seems to be operating around 75 for smooth performance, I shouldn't be too concerned. It's similar to how my PC GPU doesn't start fans until it reaches 51°C.
Install the TLP package, as Ubuntu typically doesn't handle thermal management well for laptops.
what is that? Is there a command for it or is this something I need to download?
Previously I noticed some Linux distributions didn't work with Nvidia Optimus. This feature changes how your graphics switch between the 1070 and iGPU. In Windows it picks the iGPU when you're not gaming, but Linux keeps using your 1070 because it doesn't support Optimus. This behavior affected my Ghost Pro laptop with an 970m chip. I'll update you once I discover a fix.
Discovered what I needed. Bumblebee functions like a Nvida Optimus Driver for Linux. It lets you pick your GPU through the Command Line. Make sure to install Nvidia Drivers so Bumblebee operates correctly. It might work or not, but it should. https://bumblebee-project.org/ Updated October 12, 2017 by CmzPlusHardware Spelling Issues :/
