I was checking the 5900X performance under NH-D15 with CB R23 or Aida64. It handles the high-end workloads well, staying under 72°C during tough multicore tests—great. However, the game Midnight Suns causes a brief spike to 84°C during save operations. Running small FFTs on limited cores with AVX pushes the CPU to 90°C, while doing it without AVX keeps it around 75°C. TL;DR: heavy single-core AVX loads can indeed raise the TCTL temperature beyond typical cooler limits.

It varies based on your configuration. Your power limits and boost override settings are important details to know. 5900X can reach 240W PPT, which is significantly higher than the standard output.

Appears typical. The cooler performs adequately, but the thermal mass is high. Single core spikes generate significantly higher temperatures since they experience short surges requiring much more voltage than continuous operation, plus the concentrated power load makes the hotspot extremely localized, limiting effective heat management on such a compact area.

It's normal, under watercooling I also have 78C spikes at only 140W PPT ambient 22C The temp readings are always *max* temp on all the sensors, and while all cores load makes cores not run that fast (say 4.5GHz) and heat is spread all over the chip, games use a couple cores that goes to 5GHz+ on a 5900X and then report a higher temp on a small area, nothing worrying as long as you still have 10C from throttling You could even give more headroom for all cores load (higher PPT/TDC/EDC) to get a small boost there and it won't change gaming behavior An interesting recent vid on the subject (about Intel chips but it applies to Ryzen as well) :

When temperatures stay below 100°C it's usually okay. This comes from someone in 2006 who feared their CPU reaching 55°C. It doesn't matter. Laptops regularly hit 100°C over the years. You'll tire of your CPU before heat starts to damage it. Yes, AVX tasks can really stress the processor. If one core is pushed too hard, the whole unit has more capacity to handle it and you'll get a hotspot. It's not a major issue.
