I assembled my PC around March and haven't faced any issues until recently (the past couple of months). About two months ago, my system would freeze and I had to force shut it down every time. After checking MSI Afterburner, I noticed the CPU temperature spiked from 42°C to 68°C even when there was no load and only around 9% usage. Someone could help resolve this, as it's becoming quite bothersome. Here’s a brief clip from MSI Afterburner. The temperature readings for Ryzen CPUs during idle are typical, though usually not extreme. Have you noticed higher ambient temperatures in your region? This could push temperatures much higher, leaving little time to trigger an afterburner before a crash. It might be helpful to use AMD Ryzen Master or HWmonitor to monitor CPU temps, as some applications don’t display them accurately on Ryzen systems—though this issue may have improved.
It's typical for Ryzen; their technology is built on similar principles. My 5800X performs in a comparable way.
Consensus is that the crash issue isn't connected to this behavior. @Ballisticc What kind of cooler are you using? Can you inspect or reapply thermal paste if necessary? My idea is that it was better when you assembled it a few months back, it might have been warm before, now with higher temperatures it could be reaching junction temperatures.
It's really cold in Australia right now, so ambient temperatures shouldn't be much of an issue. I'm using the standard Ryzen cooler and planning to test the thermal paste soon—just let me know after about 15 to 20 minutes.
Compatibility might be another problem. I purchased some 2400Mhz RAM from Avexir Core Red and Windows would occasionally display a blue screen. The issue became severe enough to damage data, causing the blue screen each time I launch Windows, forcing me to reinstall it. After updating to the recommended speeds on my motherboard, the problem disappeared. Make sure your motherboard’s QVL matches the RAM speed—using slower models outside that range is risky. It’s either a guaranteed success or failure.
That definitely lowered my confidence in the theory; Deffo might still be worth investigating, though results aren't always ideal. Also, if you applied the original thermal paste and faced issues removing the cooler (as many have done before), giving the system a bit of heat should make it easier to extract.
Sure, I took a little longer than fifteen minutes, but the thermal paste remains gooey and hasn’t dried out at all, so I don’t think that’s the problem. Also, my cooler cam is working properly—it didn’t stick to it or anything, which is pretty cool.
