Hello, I just got my 5800X from a 3600 and have been seeing quite high CPU temps. In BIOS it's about 50°C when running, around 40°C on the desktop, but it spikes to 50-70°C even when idle with little load. During stress tests it hits 90°C almost instantly. I know this chip gets hot, but it’s really intense. My cooler is a Scythe Mugen B and I have an AP201, so there should be enough airflow. I’ve changed the cooler several times and applied different pastes. It still feels cool to the touch most of the time. Are these readings typical for a 5800X? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

They might be able to. ~40°C idle and 90°C under heavy use are typical for a 5800X, and they tend to stay close to their thermal limits most of the time. The best way to truly assess cooling performance on today’s CPUs is by testing actual performance, because these chips use advanced boost algorithms that affect output more than temperature alone. What are your Cinebench R23 results? A Cinebench 2024 would also be useful, though since it's newer, few people—including me—have fully understood how the scores compare yet; it’s often simpler to just run R23.

Use hwinfo64 to inspect your CPU's VID/core voltages—your board could be supplying more power than required. Even without overvoltage, consider applying a slight undervolt for better performance.

Keep the chip inventory while reducing voltage via the offset option in your BIOS. -0133mv can significantly cut temperatures. It’s wise to continue tuning your system fans in the BIOS as well.

I disabled PBO, which appears to improve performance—temperatures rise more slowly, and my cinabench reached 15,000 points faster.
