High-resolution 9800x3D display with vibrant red and orange illumination
Hello, I just got a 9800x3d and it’s not posting. It’s showing red and orange (yellow light) indicators. I’ve tried reseating the CPU and reapplying thermal paste, but that didn’t help either—it actually loosened the CPU slightly, which didn’t seem to matter. Is the motherboards bios up to date? The 9800X3D is a fairly recent release so if the board hasn't been updated to the latest bios version it may not have support for the CPU. That board should have bios flashback so it should be a pretty simple process to get it flashed to the current version. Typically when it's a bios incompatibility MSI boards will illuminate the CPU and Dram light at the same time which I believe is Red and Orange.
Follow the instructions for the bios button flash in your motherboard manual. Remember you don’t have to remove any hardware; the system can be fully put together during this step, so you can skip step 3 if everything is already assembled. Ensure the flash drive you use has 32GB or less and is formatted with Fat32. Download the most recent BIOS file that matches your motherboard model from the MSI® website. Rename the BIOS file to MSI.ROM and place it on the root of the USB drive. Connect the power supply to CPU_PWR1 and ATX_PWR1 (no need to install CPU or memory). Insert the USB drive with the BIOS file into the Flash BIOS Port on the rear I/O panel. Press the Flash BIOS Button to flash the BIOS, and the LED will begin flashing. Once done, the LED will turn off.
I attempted it, but pressing the flash button doesn’t cause any blinking or action, so nothing seems to happen. Edit: initially I checked for a flash button, pressed it, and it began flashing, though the flash wasn’t actually inserted.
Keep the device on for roughly three seconds until illumination begins. Verify all power connections are secured to the motherboard and that the system is powered via wall outlet with the supply button activated. Confirm the USB port labeled "bios" has the correct flash drive connected, and ensure the file name matches precisely. From the off state, press and maintain the BIOS flash button for about three seconds or until the light starts to blink. If you encounter difficulties, consider bringing it to a professional for a BIOS update.
Sure thing! It might seem a bit unclear at first. Feel free to ask for clarification.
The lights should shut off automatically once the task is complete. The process usually finishes within 10 to 15 minutes at most. If your flash drive is slow or failing, a USB 2.0 model might work temporarily. For longer runs, try a USB 3.0 drive if possible. If the light doesn’t turn off, power down the system and restart it to check for issues.
