High power AM2 coolers
High power AM2 coolers
Just purchased a 125-watt CPU for an AM2 setup and the original cooler is struggling. It's made of aluminum with no copper core or heatpipes. I was looking into a powerful Zalman model similar to what I have on my LGA775, but it seems their AMD mounts aren't compatible. Need suggestions. Requirements: under $30, used items fine, capable of 125W CPUs. I'm considering the one with four heatpipes, affordable, and someone mentioned success with an FX 8350 (same TDP). Amazon.com lists an upHere CPU cooler with four heatpipes, aluminum fins, a 92mm PWM fan, blue LED for Intel/AMD CPUs (AM4 compatible). Another option from Amazon.com features a Zalman CNPS8X with a 100mm shark fin fan, 1200-2100 RPM, three heatpipes, DTH technology, and uses both copper and aluminum.
Won't be overclocking much, won't be putting any serious load on it. It's a dual core 3ghz CPU, pretty overkill for the older games I wanted to play (eg. Quake III, GTA Vice City) but the old one had trouble in Unreal Tournament, sometimes hitting 100% utilization. And that was single core 2ghz.
An older Opteron cooler fits a 939 chip just fine. It features a copper base, heat pipes, and similar components found in devices like the Wraith cooler for AM4. For more affordable options that still function: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO V2 with SickleFlow 120, PWM fan, Direct Contact tech, and four copper heat pipes work well with AMD Ryzen/Intel LGA1700/1200/1151 models. Newegg.com lists these at low prices. The PURE ROCK SLIM 2 on Newegg is also a budget pick—solid performance for the cost.
