My i9-9900k processor is running at 4.7 GHz across all cores, paired with an RTX 2080 Ti and 32GB of 3200MHz RAM. I’m using an Asus Z390-E Gaming motherboard and a 1000W Corsair gold PSU. My monitor is an Asus PG279Q, a 1440p display with a refresh rate of 165Hz. Games perform exceptionally smoothly at a capped frame rate of 160-165 FPS. However, attempting to exceed my monitor’s refresh rate—for instance, reaching 270-300 FPS in games like Fortnite and Cargo—results in noticeable skipping and stuttering, particularly when moving the camera. This seems counterintuitive since I’m not introducing any additional input lag, considering my drivers are up to date and my PC is only two months old. I’ve only installed basic gaming software. Could there be something I'm overlooking in the NVIDIA control panel? Or is this a fundamental issue with my setup? I’m completely frustrated and desperately seeking advice!

The difficulty lies in the fact your computer generates an excessive number of display signals for your screen. Activating V-sync will introduce a minor delay in responsiveness, however it should significantly improve the visual smoothness. Experiment with this setting to determine if it resolves the issue.

I encountered a piece discussing several elements regarding the refresh-to-frame technique, and I’m unable to locate the source. A user previously shared information on this topic, and I am eager to observe if similar posts emerge.

There’s an issue because your computer is sending too many visuals for your screen. Activating V-sync will introduce a small amount of delay, but it should significantly improve the smoothness. Experiment with this and observe if it resolves the problem.

That is known as screen tearing. This occurs when your monitor’s refresh rate exceeds the game’s frame rate. You can activate vertical synchronization or explore settings for a maximum frames per second limit.
