High memory usage temperatures during a month of gaming with the 1Mo 7900X
Specs (maybe not important): -7900xt, -7800x3d, 32 GB DDR5 6000 mt/s, MSI MAG Tomahawk b650 Wi-Fi, 1440p at 180hz monitor. Issue: During a session in Beamng, I touched my glass case near the GPU and noticed it was very hot. After checking the overheat protection, VRAM temperatures reached around 100-103°C during high settings at 1440p. This isn’t unusual—similar spikes occurred in CS2 matches with high settings (VRAM temps ~96°C). Some background: My PC is about a month old, all components bought from reputable sellers like Newegg and Amazon, only one monitor connected, idle VRAM temps are stable at 66°C with light usage. I’m a newbie builder, upgraded from an 1650TI laptop, wondering if the case might be contributing to the problem. Please see the attached image for airflow details.
It seems you might be experiencing issues around the GPU area. I noticed significant temperature drops after adjusting the cooling setup. Consider swapping the top intake to an exhaust path. Install a rear exhaust fan and use side intakes for airflow. This should prevent fans from interfering with each other. Check if your idle VRAM temperatures remain stable when fans run at full speed. My fans stay on even when not spinning, so I manage them via afterburner settings. I prefer replacing fans over the GPU since they’re more affordable. I also noticed my AIO had dead zones and hot spots near the GPU. Moving it to the top improved airflow, but I still added a fan on the sides for better distribution. Overall, my 7900 XTX is running at 36°C idle with 540RPM fans—completely silent.
Interesting! I manage my fans using afterburner and have a fairly strong curve (100% at 80c). I get the idea, but my setup isn’t ideal for that because I only have one side mount. If I swapped two AIOs with fans on top, it would just replace two exhausts. I’m thinking about whether a new case would help since my fish tank doesn’t get enough airflow. Also, I haven’t bought my own fans—they came with the cheap case. Thanks!
Switching your AIO places intake points in one area of your PC, which works well. Keeping them together inside the case generates excess heat. Moving it up helps dissipate warmth more effectively. If fans clash, air stagnates in certain spots. You should design sides for intake and rear for exhaust. Your GPU’s rear has a natural dead zone—no airflow there. Add a rear fan as exhaust and keep three at the top. This means five fans total: three bottom, two sides, and four at the rear. You’ll need one more fan than you currently have for best performance. Adjusting this will significantly lower temperatures. Proper airflow is crucial.
I would attempt without the three top fans. If the GPU maintains a good temperature under load (around 70°C), then your GPU is cooling adequately and the case isn't the issue. I’m not sure if those VRAM temperatures are typical, but if they’re higher than expected, I’d suspect the thermal pads might be the problem. Edit: Do those three lower fans draw in air? Essentially, VRAM doesn't really overheat much on most cards unless the manufacturer skipped pads or used poor ones. What are your other GPU temperatures? Also, your cooling setup seems a bit odd—consider placing the side fan and the top-right fan for intake, the two front fans for exhaust, and adding a rear exhaust fan.
It seems the airflow issue is the main concern. I experienced a similar intense glass setup with an incorrect fan setup myself. Improving the airflow significantly made the side panel much cooler, only heating up during heavy gaming. The bottom right fan's in/out balance canceled each other out, essentially removing fresh air while the top left intake was just drawing in and expelling it directly from the opening. Based on the radiator setup, I’d mount it at the top of the case for exhaust. Fixing the airflow should definitely help.
My central temperatures are normal, staying around 70-80°C during heavy use and I’m getting intake air. Thanks to everyone for the assistance—I’ll be back in roughly an hour (gotta head to the gym).
