High-end PC struggling with low frame rates in Arma 3.
Hello! I just began playing Arma 3 but I’m struggling with low frame rates. I usually see around 40-60 FPS when there’s no action, but in combat it drops to 20-30 FPS. I’ve looked at some guides on optimizing graphics settings, but they didn’t really help much. My PC specs are: RTX 3070, 8GB RAM, Intel Core i7 7700K (4.2GHz), B250M Bazooka, two 16GB SSDs at 2100MHz. I can’t go higher because of my motherboard.
Arma operates well at around 7700k, but its performance is heavily influenced by CPU single-core speed and multiplayer server choice. Generally, playing King of the Hill with 100 players works smoothly at about 40 FPS on average in cities. To boost performance, reduce your view distance, though many servers set their own limits via presets. You can usually change these settings through the overlay menu by pressing the "~" key under ESC while in-game. However, some servers don’t support this option.
Arma gains significant performance from using an SSD. It won't raise your FPS, but the game will operate much more smoothly, particularly during zooming in and out with scopes.
It's accurate. Checking in-game settings for Arma can help you understand their effects. For instance, lower performance modes rely more on CPU, while higher modes use GPU. Since your system is constrained by CPU power, you should shift all processing to the GPU to maximize efficiency. (And similarly) Turn off PnP entirely—this greatly affects reflections in vehicle mirrors and significantly lowers FPS. It's also irrelevant since you won't actually use it during gameplay.
Only a few things to remember: I use 1080p at low quality, a viewing distance of about 2000, 180-220 frames per second, 7800x3d EH mode 3, XMP P3 p3, and efficiency mode. I also get around 30 fps three years ago. With an RX 580 and 3700x, a card around 2060 or higher works well for higher frame rates!
