High CPU activity leading to reduced frame rates in Fortnite.
Hello everyone, I've been working on fixing the Fortnite frame drop issue for a long time (you might have seen my previous posts). I believe I've identified the cause and need your assistance. Whenever a frame drop occurs, CPU usage spikes significantly—sometimes reaching 100%. I own an Intel Core i5-10400F with six cores, which shouldn't be the case. I'm struggling to find a solution online and would really appreciate any help you can offer!
Looking into each core individually is a good idea, not just the overall stats. It seems quite probable that all cores reach 100%, but it’s possible there’s an issue with the monitoring. For tracking CPU usage, I usually suggest MSI Afterburner—it’s lightweight and quite precise. Your opinion on alternatives is valid, though; it really depends on your settings and resolution. Checking per-core usage gives you more insight into what might be happening. Also, could you share your system specifications?
I’ll rely on Riva Tuner to see which cores are active next. Previously I used Task Manager and saw a big jump in usage every frame drop. My setup is an i5 10400f with an RTX 3080 12GB, 32GB DDR4 RAM at 2933MHz.
I understand... taskmanager isn't ideal for tracking performance, so afterburner might be better to verify. But now it's clear why sharing specs matters. Your CPU is completely overwhelmed, the processor is far too weak for the GPU. You can try capping the frame rate so it never reaches 100%—this should prevent drops. Alternatively, consider upgrading your CPU. The 10700k or 10850k should work with your motherboard, but check the VRM voltage before proceeding. I won't give specific board suggestions since I don't use Intel chips (they're too costly). The 5800X3D could also work, depending on availability and price. It might not be more expensive than a similar Intel board, especially if you factor in the motherboard.
I’m confused about why my system feels like it’s being CPU limited. I thought the i5 10400f was a solid 6-core processor. It seems more like it’s a decent CPU with a really powerful graphics card—kind of like adding a supercharger to a 3-cylinder engine. Still, no matter what I adjust the graphics settings to, I keep experiencing stuttering frame drops. Also, when I cap my frame rate at 120fps, it drops to around 50fps or less, and at 60fps it falls to 20-30fps. Plus, upgrading my system should let the motherboard handle any 10th or 11th generation CPU I throw at it, right? My MSI Z490a Pro is the latest I’ve got.
it's a solid CPU, but it doesn't quite match up with the 3080. you should double-check if it's actually hitting 100% often, which seems unlikely due to game performance. the issue likely lies with the GPU being pushed beyond its limits with a stronger CPU. therefore, capping the frame rate is a practical solution—your CPU is decent, but it can't fully utilize the GPU.
It seems the GPU is trying to relax its posture while the CPU keeps pushing back, causing the system to lag.
