Hey, can someone please help me get my internet back working? I'm stuck and need some advice right now.
I moved into a new apartment, but my power outlet is in the living room. I need to plug my computer using a long cable because it's too far away. If I open a door or move furniture, the wire gets cut off and won't work right. Is there something I can buy like a router or TP-Link? Someone please explain how this works so I know if I should use one instead of just plugging directly into the wall socket in my room? Will the connection drop sometimes when using that way?
So I guess you mean you plug the pc into a wall outlet in your apartment, do you have a router or modem? I think you are talking about powerline network devices. TPLINK is the better known brand but many companies make these things. It's pretty simple. You plug one device into a power outlet near where there is a wall jack. Then you plug the other into an outlet near your pc. Now hook up ethernet cables from the wall jack to the first powerline network unit. The signal goes over the wires and comes out on that unit near your pc. Next, hook another ethernet cable between that unit and your pc. Most units if you buy two at once are already set up to talk to each other so you don't need to do anything else but plug them into wall outlets. It depends on what you are doing and how fast your internet connection is. They are much slower than a direct ethernet cable. Although they have numbers like 1000 or 2000, you will not get anywhere near that speed. If you are lucky, they might run at 300mbps but expect more in the 130 to 150mbps range. Make sure to buy newer versions with a number of 1000 or 2000 instead of the older 500 or 600 units. The units are very stable, so you should get no data loss and no problems with latency. The speed is more than fast enough for most things. The only application that can really use a lot of bandwidth would be downloading something huge like a big game. I guess if you were going to download some 50gbyte game, you could just use your ethernet cable and when you are done, go back to powerline units to play the game.
I just need something specific, like a router, to connect properly. You're welcome! I already have a BT broadband modem that's right here in my living room. The reason is because I download way too many games, over 50GB total. For sure, TP-Link would be the best choice for this setup.
You get a pair of tplink powerline adapters and two ethernet cables. You connect one cable from the router to a powerline unit in the living room. Then you connect another cable from that powerline unit to your computer in another room. You can download games through these units, but it might take longer than usual. Suppose downloading a game takes an hour over the powerline. If your internet is super fast like 1 gigabit, you could run one temporary cable across the floor for maybe five minutes and then finish downloading in ten minutes. After that, you put the temporary cable away and use the adapters to play the game normally. Everything depends on how fast your internet connection is. If it's only slow at say 100 mbps, there won't be any difference.
will having a bad connection make your game feel slow when you're trying to chat with friends?
You could see a tiny bit more delay, maybe two milliseconds, but it won't matter much because you probably can't tell by the time.
