You forgot to mention which microphone you have, or at least what kind (USB or 3.5mm). Anyhow, I'm gonna guess it is just a dumb 3.5mm mic, and because it works fine in other devices but not the one you are trying to use it with... the sound card on that device is borked or of bad quality (typical on low-end mobos, especially older ones). Not much you can do about it, except getting a new sound card.

Are you connecting through the front panel or directly into the back? Try connecting the rear of your motherboard straight. By "dumb" I meant a basic analog microphone, not necessarily a low-end model, my goal wasn't to embarrass you, sorry if it came across that way. Still, the cheap option isn't helping much. Switching to wireless would definitely fix the problem (since it avoids the built-in mic jack). But if you go wired... you might run into the same situation again.
