I’ve accumulated a lot of unnecessary files over time, making it hard to sift through my PC manually. I’ve tried reinstalling several times but still feel uncertain about the best path forward. I’m curious about what “personal files” really are and whether a clean install would restore everything without keeping those files.

Personal files refer to data stored directly on the operating system drive itself. Anything else I don’t know about remains unclear.

Typically, aim for a fresh setup every year. Unless you're a tech-savvy person who likes to move files around, it's usually enough to save your Desktop and Documents folders (in the C:\Users\<username> folder) to an external drive, then reset the hard drive or SSD, and start over. If possible, make a backup of your PC beforehand in case you lose any important data before performing a clean install.
