Here is your i7-6700K overclocked, ready for action!
Hey guys, i have this processor which is an Intel i7 6700K running at 4.5GHz with a voltage of 1.34 volts and a maximum temperature of 80C. I mostly play Guild Wars 2 and World of Tanks. In the near future, i want to upgrade my monitor from 1920x1080 at 144Hz to 2560x1440 at 144Hz. When i want to boost the frames per second in these games - can i change this processor? How many Hz will i get after changing it? How much temperature will go down? Is it worth it? Or should i look for a new motherboard and CPU like an Intel i7 8700K or i7 9700K with a better motherboard? I think both games are pretty much dependent on the processor power. Thank you L.
So, I have exactly the same computer as you. My rig is an i5-6700k running at 4.5GHz. Right now, on my RTX 2060 Super, playing in 1440p, everything feels slow and laggy. The main issue is that my CPU is doing a lot of unnecessary work while the graphics card sits idle.
I'm planning to upgrade this setup, but I'm waiting to see what happens with the new Ryzen chips coming out next year. Honestly, the Ryzen 3000 series didn't perform much better than Intel's 8th Gen before it, and even the newer generation is pretty useless for me because they use a very high power draw (TDP), offer almost no extra speed compared to my old chips, and basically copy their design. It feels like doing nothing new.
If the new Ryzen doesn't prove itself as good in time, I'll probably stick with Intel's current offerings on their 10nm process just in case they release anything useful later. At this point, I really don't have much budget left for upgrades...
