Every time I turn my PC off and come back on, my reliability history says something bad happened. The log says: Description: The previous system shutdown at X on X was unexpected. Event Viewer shows a Kernel-Power Event ID 41, which means the system rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error might happen if the computer stops responding, crashes, or loses power unexpectedly. There is no blue screen of death, crashing, etc., I just notice this every day that I check my PC. Have I tried running SFC, DISM and disabling fast boot? Ran troubleshooting steps, but nothing fixed it. Should I ignore this? I know the 7000 Errors & Information logs in a week after installing Windows fresh can be ignored usually, but this is the only critical event I'm having. Thanks.
Do you have Fast Startup turned on for Windows? This saves your hard drive by putting it to sleep when you shut down and waking it up later. If you use an SSD, this setting causes lots of problems instead. To turn off Fast Startup: go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what the power buttons do > make sure the Fast Startup box is unchecked. Then hit Reboot.
It turns itself off without any problems. I just noticed that my login history appears right after I come back in. Usually, when the system is turned off for a long time, I can turn it on and off quickly, but nothing happens either way with a restart. Leaving the PC off all night then comes back the next day, the log shows up during the boot cycle.
Do you have Windows Fast Startup turned on? This puts the computer's brain to sleep when you shut down and wakes it up when you turn it back on. If your hard drive is an SSD, don't use this trick; it causes all sorts of weird problems. To turn off Fast Startup: go into Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > choose what the power buttons do > make sure the Fast Startup box isn't checked then restart the computer.
I had turned off the option in my BIOS settings, but it was still checked inside that Windows menu. For me, it's under Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Power Options/Change what power buttons do, then choose Change settings that are currently available there and it lets you adjust things that are normally greyed out. I couldn't find the way you described. Just so you know & this might help someone else who is getting stuck on similar problems. Thanks a lot!
