I need a way to keep track of all my stuff at home. I am setting this up on a Raspberry Pi right now. Whatever works for me will do since it doesn't have to cost much. Everything I've seen so far is meant for shops, not personal homes. I want something that helps me know what's inside if I get robbed and can easily tell the police or insurance company exactly what was stolen. Any ideas help, whether they are free or paid.

I actually looked into starting a company with this idea, but never followed through on it. I would have taken pictures and listed all the item's model numbers and serial numbers inside the house. Then I would give the owner a CD or DVD showing what was in there. The business would store everything in an Access database (to start) somewhere else away from home (I thought more about natural disasters than thefts). For my own inventory, I'd just use an Excel sheet or something very simple like a piece of paper.

I take pictures of every thing I think might run away if something bad happens at home. I get what the item looks like and a photo of its model, serial number when applicable. I keep these things on cloud storage so I can see them always. I used to have a spreadsheet about it but the cops didn't care about that part.

I want to get a database and put all my photos in there so things stay organized. The times I've been robbed, everything gets stolen or lost. So I'm planning to use a special place online where you can keep your stuff safe from burglars.

If you don't have a pile of hundreds of things, then keeping one notebook organized and synced to the internet will just work fine for you.

I thought about starting a business based on this idea but never did it. I would have taken pictures and listed the model numbers and serial numbers of every item in the house and given the owner a CD/DVD full of all their stuff. The company would keep an Access database to start, stored in a safe place because they needed to protect against things like natural disasters or theft instead of just burglaries. For keeping track on my own, I'd just use a simple Excel spreadsheet or even write it down on a piece of paper.
