I need to learn some basics about overclocking because I don't know how it works yet. About three months ago, I bought a laptop with a Ryzen 4500u processor and it was running my memory at 3200 MHz by default. When I added two sticks of RAM instead of one, the computer worked fine. Did anyone ever overclock their RAM? It's hard to say for sure. Recently, I got an HP Omen 30L Desktop with one stick of 8GB Hyperx Fury memory that has a total of 8GB. If you buy two identical sticks from Amazon and try to make them both run at the same speed, they might not hit 3200 MHz; maybe they only go as high as 2666 MHz. Some people asked Best Buy why and someone there said HP just doesn't support RAM above 2666 MHz. The BIOS also blocks overclocking or XMP settings. I found some Corsair Vengeance sticks that say they can run at 3200 MHz for the same price as the 2666 MHz ones. I thought I would buy the 3200 MHz RAM and it just goes down to 2666 MHz automatically like a normal computer does. But instead, it went down to something like 2166 MHz.
Here is what I need help understanding: How can someone explain all of this to me? Why would the original HP stick work at 3200 MHz while other RAM sticks that are supposed to run faster don't seem to do so? Also, why did my 3200 MHz memory slow down to 2166 MHz when I added more RAM?
Then, after all of this, I opened up Ryzen command center and set the memory clock to half speed (1600 MHz). After restarting, it actually runs at 3200 MHz. I don't understand how Ryzen Master works that way. Is it always running in the background? Would those changes still happen if I remove or uninstall the software?
My main worry is this: Since my RAM was supposed to be fast enough for 3200 MHz, why did I feel worried about overheating or damage when I forced it up there? Will pushing memory that high cause too much heat, or will it wear out the parts in my computer? Just so I know if overclocking is safe.

How much matters depends on how you define overclocking. Most DDR4 sticks start with a base clock of 2133MHz and have XMP profiles set by the manufacturer as safe and stable. That does not mean they are overclocked; that is only if you push them past what was tested as best. There is also an IMC (Internal Memory Controller) inside modern CPUs to consider. Pushing RAM too high for this controller can be seen as an overclock, but it isn't about the RAM stick itself. Some sticks work at full speed while others don't, regardless of their XMP settings. RAM must follow JEDEC standards, and those rules tell the BIOS how to configure things for performance. In most cases, you can change these values yourself. If you mix different speeds or timings from different sticks, the BIOS has to make a choice because it's trying to balance everything. This usually means slowing down one thing while speeding up another, which often fails completely when mixing incompatible stuff. It all comes down to how flexible your specific BIOS is. Laptop BIOSes are generally very limited in what options they offer for you.

I mentioned this before, and I can say 3200MHz RAM easily runs at that speed. The fact it is currently running at 2133MHz means the BIOS didn't turn on XMP settings because of how it was configured there. There is no risk of overheating since the memory chips are built to handle at least that much, even if they need a higher voltage like 1.35v instead of 1.2v for slower speeds. The only real danger would be instability if something goes wrong during setup. Whether the RAM succeeds or fails depends on what your BIOS can do; you just have to try it out yourself because there are no strict rules.
Anyone else with any more ideas? There are no extra options in the BIOS menu. Is using Ryzen Master messing things up when it comes to RAM speed versus the BIOS settings? I still have some questions!
Have you ever just used ryzen master to boost your ram speed? I'm on the same journey right now with a ryzen 5 3000 gtx 1660 super hp omen 30l and two sticks of corsair vengeance 16gb 3200 mhz.
