helpy720 (i7 7700hq) halts turbo boost when temperatures drop
Hello! Your Lenovo Y720 with i7 7700HQ is showing significant performance changes when running AAA games. The CPU boosts to 3.40 GHz but drops back to base at 2.70 GHz shortly after, while the GPU stays around 65°C. Temperatures are moderate, and both CPU and GPU usage remain high. The battery settings are set to "High Performance," and undervolting hasn’t helped. You mentioned checking XTU settings—have you looked into adjusting power management or thermal thresholds there? Let me know!
Remove XTU and share some images of ThrottleStop so I can explain the solution. Lenovo has been doing this for years across many of their laptops. They assume users won’t notice any changes while playing games. This seems like a poor choice. The screenshots will reveal the throttling technique being used on your device.
Hi herrakorva, I faced the same problem until last month. After updating both the CPU and GPU and adjusting the CPU voltage, it’s fixed now. The maximum temperature on the CPU is around 70-80°C and the GPU stays at a steady 62°C. For undervolting, I recommend watching the Dave2d YouTube video and there are many tutorials about this topic. Good luck!
