I placed all components for my latest setup, but whenever I connect the CPU cable from my PSU, the system shuts down. My new motherboard supports a 12-pin connector, yet I only have an 8-pin. Since I won’t be overclocking, I don’t need the extra four pins. My PSU is a bit outdated but should still provide sufficient power for this build. Anyone have suggestions?

If you were purchasing a new PSU, I’d opt for something around 850W to allow extra capacity. It seems your current power supply should handle it without problems. Could you clarify the specifics of why your system shuts down?

When I connect the CPU cable to my motherboard, the whole system powers down. I tested it once while the system was running, checking for a short circuit, but it wasn’t there. If I turn it on without the cable, it starts but immediately shuts off when I plug it in. Should I replace the power supply unit?

No, none of the components are overclocked.

Connecting the cables while the device is running is safe, though it’s not usually advised.

Turn off your PC and then the PSU. After that, connect the cables. It's a miracle you didn't damage your PC or hurt yourself. Do you also use a fork to take bread out of the toaster?

None of these apply to me. I’m not even sure I understand overclocking yet.
