Are you considering buying the 10400f now or already owning it? It’s generally not advised to upgrade to older hardware unless you have it, since the 12100 performs significantly better in single-core tasks. The M.2 slot might be affected by lane constraints, which could limit your options. You should probably stick with the other two slots available on the board.

The available space isn't suitable because Intel upgraded the number of PCIe lanes on the 11th generation processors (from 16 to 20). The board was built for the 11th gen CPUs, so this M.2 port is intended for those additional lanes. Your current model doesn’t support the extra lanes, making it impossible to use this slot.

It depends on the context, but you usually need to use the second option if it's required for the structure or meaning. The first one might work in some cases, but the second is often necessary.

It seems unlikely to matter much because I suspect the disabled unit is linked to the CPU. Either way works.

The two lower positions are functional, though the bottom one connects more quickly, so based on drive quality I’d choose that one.
