I recently bought a PC. The monitors are still connected using DP cables. However, I want to use my work laptop without issues. The work laptop only has one HDMI port (no DP). What ports should I set up on a KVM switch for this setup? Some sources say the laptop needs both DP and HDMI connections to the switch. Or, can I send HDMI from the laptop to the switch and use both the DP and HDMI connections to connect to one monitor, depending on whether it's going to the laptop or the base unit? Please let me know if this makes sense. Thank you in advance.
The setup does not require linking both DP and HDMI connections from the laptop unless a dual monitor configuration is necessary. One monitor should connect via DP while the other via HDMI. This arrangement can be implemented when needed.

Thank you for your reply and the details. I should have made it more explicit about my dual monitor configuration. My thoughts were a connected laptop connected via HDMI to the switch, with one monitor using both HDMI and DP, and the other using only DP. Then the base unit was connected via DP to the switch as well. Would this arrangement allow the PC to utilize the DP connections while the laptop uses HDMI? I’ll also do some research on Google to better understand the setup. Thanks again.
When monitors are connected in a daisy-chain setup, both the first monitor and the laptop need to support Multi-Stream Transport. HDMI to Displayport adapters cannot achieve this, regardless of whether they're active, passive, or used in a switch/hub, since HDMI doesn't allow it. If your laptop has a USB-C port that can also send Displayport signals, that might work. Alternatively, for business-class laptops, you could use a docking station which may provide additional video outputs.

I was thinking about whether I really need a dual monitor setup for work. Maybe I could use the laptop with one monitor instead.
I have a KVM switch with two DP ports. Would it be possible to put a single monitor in it, connect the laptop via USB-C to DP cables, and then link the second monitor directly to my PC?
That way the switch would handle both devices, or should I connect both monitors to the switch and only one connection from the laptop?
