Hey! I set up a new build with 7800x3d, Gigabyte 4080S Aero, B650 Aorus AX Ice, 32 GB DDR3 memory, Corsair rm1000e, and an SN850 1TB SSD. I assembled the PC outside the case to test it, since my case was delayed. It performed well for a week. Last night, my case arrived. I put everything together and it worked for about an hour. After restarting, I went to cook and noticed there was no display. The PC was running, but the DisplayPort signal was missing. I restarted again, and on the first boot screen, the Aorus logo would freeze after a few seconds. Then the screen went blank, and I could hear the Windows startup sound after roughly ten seconds. I tried various fixes and thought there might be a GPU problem, so I sent it back. However, I was unsure if my motherboard was the issue—my friends used a 1070 that worked fine, and it played for a while too. This made me wonder if my PCIe Gen4 slots were damaged, especially since the 4080 model is Gen4 and PCIe Gen3 devices can sometimes cause trouble. (P.S. I sent the GPU back and checked the BIOS settings, but I can’t test it right now.) One thing that happened was, when everything was connected and I tried reinstalling Windows after a full format, it started normally. But during driver installation or setup, my PC would lag or crash completely. Also, in BIOS, the GPU wasn’t detected properly—only as a PCIe Gen4 device. Thanks!
I believe the GPU is faulty since the slots appear to work properly when you start without drivers.
The Gen 4 pins match those of Gen 3, except for the supported speed. If the pins are faulty, the 1070 won't function. At this stage, hold off until the new GPU arrives and try it out.
Received RMA and returned today. System operates smoothly with Gen 3 enabled in BIOS. If Auto or Gen 4 problems arise, I’ll bring the motherboard back on Monday. Uncertain about the issue. Ran GPU-Z render test with Gen 4 – lagged initially but stabilized at Gen 4, then intermittently dropped to Gen 2 and back to Gen 4 before settling at Gen 2. Performed OCCT test, but the PC crashed.
I see why the motherboard is a likely culprit given the GPU's RMA status. A BIOS update might work sometimes, but if you need to return it, that seems like the most reliable option.
