Help with boosting performance on an ASUS ROG laptop GL703GS I7 8750H
OC doesn't provide significant advantages over stock boost configurations. As a laptop, managing heat under heavy loads is more critical than achieving extra frames per second. Even running at default settings can cause temperatures to rise to around 90°C. OC forces the CPU into throttling sooner, which is harmful to battery life during prolonged use.
Thank you for the suggestion. However, I'm not a gamer; I purchased this laptop for 3D work and require overclocking occasionally to enhance certain renders. Since I don't use it for extended gaming sessions, I'm concerned it won't harm my battery. I rely on GPU rendering with tools like Redshift and Octane, so I'd like to overclock my GPU as well if feasible. My Asus ROG includes a GTX 1070 8Gb. Please let me know.
Use MSI Afterburner to boost your GPU performance. However, laptops often have unique power configurations that can cause instability under heavy loads. Many users resort to downclocking to maintain stability. This might be a rare opportunity. For gaming, it's advisable to increase VRAM usage. Sometimes lowering the GPU clock speed and allocating more VRAM can improve results. Try this yourself by starting at +100 MHz on VRAM and observing the behavior. If you notice strange visuals like green and red spots, it indicates you've hit the limits. Reduce the speed by 10 to 20 seconds to ensure safe operation. (If it fails and causes a black screen or crashes the Nvidia driver even at +100 MHz, please accept that further overclocking instructions aren't available.)
